The Institute of Geography is structured into four thematic clusters: Society, Environment, Integration, and Didactics. This structure allows for both a comprehensive study of geography and four possible specializations.

Combined Institute #

The Institute of Geography at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is the only institution in Berlin and Brandenburg that offers training in both Human Geography and Physical Geography. Moreover, we are the only location in Berlin that provides teacher training in geography.

Networking with Non-University Research #

About 100 researchers teach and conduct research in the four thematic clusters (Society, Environment, Integration, and Geography Didactics) at the Institute of Geography. A particular highlight is the strong collaboration with non-university research institutes, which is reflected in the inclusion of 10 joint professorships in teaching.

Focus Areas within Berlin’s Research Landscape #

Due to Berlin’s extensive research landscape and the close cooperation between the four major universities ( Berlin University Alliance), a wide range of thematic specializations is possible.
