Objectives and Content (MA) #

Independent academic work and the methodologically reflective assessment of current urban challenges are central components of the Master’s program Urban Geographies – Human Geography. The program provides in-depth insights into theories, research approaches, and methodological perspectives on urban studies. It also offers the opportunity to explore interdisciplinary questions.

Focus: Understanding and Shaping the City #

Students learn to reflect on current urban development policy challenges and measures, placing them in a broader political and societal context. They critically engage with urban structures and processes.

In addition, they acquire the ability to apply scientific methods and insights to real-world urban development issues and use them to formulate solutions.

Methods #

The program employs a variety of teaching and learning methods. In addition to traditional formats such as lectures and seminars, the curriculum includes study projects, field analyses, excursions, internships, and numerous opportunities to independently design and conduct research processes (see: Contact Point for Geographical Practice.

Networking #

The Department of Geography’s strong integration into Berlin’s diverse academic landscape provides students with a wide range of opportunities to engage in research-oriented studies.

International Perspective #

Students who wish to complete parts of their curriculum abroad benefit from the Department of Geography’s extensive network of cooperation agreements with European and non-European universities (see: Erasmus.

Qualification #

Graduates of the program qualify for careers in various fields, particularly in academia, urban planning, consulting, participatory urban development, and site planning in the private sector.

They find employment opportunities in municipalities, public institutions, and private enterprises.
