Wherever possible, we strive to closely couple teaching with our ongoing research.


Our classes are usually offered as integrated courses that combine lectures, discussions, seminars, lab exercises, or field work. Many of our classes are based on problem-based learning and project-oriented work. Wherever possible, we strive to closely couple teaching with our ongoing research.

Our classes at the Bachelor's level

We currently offer parts of the basic education in physical geography, as well as three elective classes. Here you can see our recommended teaching program for those wanting to emphasize biogeography, ecology, and conservation in your BSc. The classes described are our core modules. Electives could come from within or outside HU Berlin.

We are involved in three classes at the Master’s level. All classes at the Master’s level are held in English. Here we provide an overview of the MSc classes regularly offered, including suggestions for electives for those wanting to put an emphasis on biodiversity and/or land use.

We are always looking for motivated students interested in our research themes.


We have a range of available topics and usually aim to develop thesis topics jointly together with candidates. Typically, thesis topics will interlink with our ongoing research.

Teaching philosophy

Contributing to undergraduate and graduate education at the Department of Geography is a core mission of the Conservation Biogeography Lab.

We teach BSc / BA and MSc / MA classes with the goals to:

  • Broaden students’ understanding of concepts in biogeography, conservation science, ecology, and sustainability science
  • Introduce students to cutting edge tools to analyze phenomena in these fields
  • Foster students’ capacity to develop their own ideas and critical thinking, and to share their views
  • Develop students’ abilities to work independently and in teams
  • Allow students to learn more about how science works
  • Improve students’ communication skills
  • Offer classes that are fun!
